چکیده

For answer see page 130 Figure: Axial (A) and coronal (B) T2-weighted fat-suppressed and large-field-of-view coronal short tau inversion recovery (C) magnetic resonance images of the right shoulder. A 41-year-old man presented with moderate right shoulder pain on abduction. He had a history of sudden-onset right shoulder pain (10/10 in intensity) at rest and profound weakness on right shoulder abduction 1.5 years earlier. The pain and weakness remained at the same level for approximately 2 weeks and then gradually improved. At presentation, the patient had pain rated 7/10 in intensity and muscle strength rated 4 out of 5 (5=normal) on right arm abduction, but no pain at rest. Significant atrophy of the deltoid muscle and mild atrophy of the right pectoral muscle were noted, in addition to numbness along the lateral aspect of the right shoulder.

Neuralgic amyotrophy (Parsonage-Turner syndrome) is an idiopathic brachial plexus neuritis which commonly affects the upper trunks. Since the first description during World War II there have been multiple reports highlighting the manifestations of this syndrome. The clinical presentation may be individual mononeuropathy, multiple mononeuropathies or involvement of a single trunk, most commonly ...

Recurrent Vocal Fold Paralysis and Parsonage-Turner Syndrome

Background. Parsonage-Turner syndrome, or neuralgic amyotrophy (NA), is an acute brachial plexus neuritis that typically presents with unilateral shoulder pain and amyotrophy but also can affect other peripheral nerves, including the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Idiopathic vocal fold paralysis (VFP) represents approximately 12% of the VFP cases and recurrence is extremely rare. Methods and Result...

Incidence of Neuralgic Amyotrophy (Parsonage Turner Syndrome) in a Primary Care Setting - A Prospective Cohort Study

OBJECTIVE Neuralgic amyotrophy is considered a rare peripheral nervous system disorder but in practice seems grossly under recognized, which negatively affects care for these patients. In this study we prospectively counted the one-year incidence rate of classic neuralgic amyotrophy in a primary care setting. METHODS In a prospective cohort study during the year 2012 we registered all new cas...
